Frequency Neurofeedback/Equiscope

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback is a Neurological Therapy based on the works of Dr. Joe Kamiya & Dr. Barry Sterman, University of Chicago & UCLA, respectively, beginning in the late 1950s.  They realized that via a simple reward system, the brain could learn to alter its waves into more healthy, calming, and beneficial patterns.  Neurofeedback provides immediate feedback from a computer-based program that assesses a client’s brainwave activity. The program then uses sound or visual signals to reorganize or retrain these brain signals to reflect healthier, more well-functioning brain waves (more conducive to maximum well-being markers). By responding to this process, clients learn (most note, unconsciously) to regulate and improve their brain function and to alleviate symptoms of various neurological and mental health disorders.

When It’s Used

Children, adolescents, and adults with chronic headaches, chronic pain, seizure conditions, behavior disorders, attention deficits, hyperactivity, autism, depression, developmental delays, acquired brain injuries, patterns of pain & contraction from whiplash or other injuries, birth trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, dementia, and even other age-related cognition losses can find neurofeedback on the spectrum from curative to helpful.  It is ofttimes used as an adjunct therapy with other forms of intervention.

What to Expect

Neurofeedback therapy typically consists of once-a-week sessions for an average of 20 weeks. Some people need fewer sessions, while others require more. While you are sitting in a chair, the therapist will attach sensors to your scalp. A computer EEG program will process your brain signals and provide information about various brainwave frequencies. Using a program similar to a video game, you may watch the graphics or listen to music while your brain and central receive feedback signals from the program (this is Active Neurofeedback). Your Doctor or Therapist may use this in combination with Passive Neurofeedback where your brainwaves will simply respond to received mild electromagnetic stimulus (unperceivable, extremely low pEMFs — pulsing electro-magnetic frequencies – like inaudible music.  In fact, the equipment used by this office runs pEMFs 10,000,000 x weaker than tradition trans-cranial electro-magnetic brain stimulation approved by the FDA in 2008.  It is very very safe).  The program(s) will then begin directing your brainwave activity toward more desirable and controlled patterns. You will get immediate feedback from the program when your brainwave patterns improve. Between sessions, you should be able to notice changes in stress, sleep patterns, and/or mental clarity.

How It Works

Neurofeedback is not considered a “cure”, but rather a method of managing or regulating the workings of the brain so it functions in a healthier manner. That being said, many find that coming back, after initial treatments, is unnecessary for even up to a year at a time or more.  However, often, repeated training is necessary to  teach the central nervous system to reorganize and regulate brainwave frequencies.  One can watch the progress that the brain is making toward these goals with periodical progress mapping, which can be nothing short of astounding to observe.

What to Look for in a Neurofeedback Therapist

Doctors, Therapists and Licensed health professionals who have been trained to use neurofeedback equipment and programs can provide neurofeedback services in their private practices and clinics with a BCIA Certification (International Standard of Professional, educational, and testing standards for Neurofeedback and qEEG moderated Biofeedback).
